Zuckerberg says he is right person to lead Facebook despite 'mistakes'

Facebook could be SHUT DOWN if it fails to respect users’ privacy

"We've seen some scraping", he says. The political consultancy gained access to Facebook information on up to 87 million users, 71 million of whom are Americans, Facebook said. Zuckerberg noted that as long as there's money to be made from the data his $448bn business collects, the Cambridge Analyticas of the world will be all too happy to take it.

Last month, Wylie spoke to multiple media outlets and portrayed Cambridge Analytica, his former employer, as excavating a massive trove of Facebook user data to try to steer voters on behalf of its political clients.

But some of those companies, like Cambridge Analytica, may still have your data, for all that Facebook knows, and there's really no way to stop it being used to target you with ads.

Facebook revealed Wednesday that "malicious actors" had scraped the personal data of most of its users by using a search feature to find their profile pages. Other users affected were in countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, U.K., Canada and Mexico. Or maybe consider whether you need to share every piece of information with Facebook, because effectively anything that's public on Facebook could now be anywhere. The results of the 2016 election showed how well Cambridge Analytica's data mining worked.

The initial estimates were that the app gathered data on some 50 million Facebook users. Facebook says most of the affected users are in the U.S. Facebook will alert those members whose profiles were used by Cambridge Analytica starting next week.

In Wednesday's post, titled An Update on Our Plans to Restrict Data Access on Facebook, the company outlined several changes. The vast majority of these were in the US.

"Knowing what I know today, clearly we should have done more and we will going forward".

Earlier Wednesday, the House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee announced what appeared to be the first congressional appearance by Zuckerberg since the scandal broke.

Noting that till now, people could enter another person's phone number or email address into Facebook search to help find them, he said this has been especially useful for finding friends in languages which take more effort to type out a full name, or where many people have the same name.

Up to 4 inches of snow expected
Higher snowfall could be seen heading south along Route 15 in Union County and more toward Harrisburg, he said. Starting as rain, the precipitation turned to snow in the predawn hours before letting up late in the morning.

Unlike previous banning sprees, Wednesday's deletion of 270 accounts and pages from Facebook and Instagram was "not based on the content" and included predominantly Russian-language "commentary on domestic and worldwide political issues, the promotion of Russian culture and tourism as well as debate on more everyday issues." .

He also shrugged off the notion that Facebook's collection of data for use in targeted adds was a bad thing, arguing that advertisements created to target and manipulate specific portions of the population based on personal information were actually not such a bad thing after all.

He said he has not fired anyone due to the Cambridge Analytica incident, but they are still looking into this. Serving as vice president was conservative strategist Steve Bannon, who also was the head of Breitbart News. They could also post on the event's wall on your behalf.

Groups: Apps now need permission from a member to access information in groups, and from an administrator to access information in secret groups. "All future access to the Pages API will need to be approved by Facebook", Schroepfer added. Developers' access to Instagram will also be severely restricted.

This coming Monday, all Facebook users will receive a notice on their Facebook feeds with a link to see what apps they use and what information they have shared with those apps.

Some of the biggest issues facing Facebook, Zuckerberg said, were questions such as can the firm get its systems under control and can it make sure that the systems aren't being used to undermine democracy. He said: "For some reason we haven't been able to kick this notion for years that people think we will sell data to advertisers".

Tony Romm is a technology policy reporter at The Washington Post. He also noted on the call that Facebook will have 20,000 employees working on security by the end of the year.

Elizabeth Dwoskin has been reporting from Silicon Valley since 2013.
