Facebook updates privacy settings, plans new terms of service

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg

It is unclear how many hearings Zuckerberg will attend, and of which committees.

Johannes Caspar, the German government official responsible for policing the activities of Facebook, on Wednesday criticised the USA social media company's reaction in the ongoing Cambridge Analytical data scandal.

Authorities in Britain have meanwhile seized data from Cambridge Analytica in their investigation, and European Union officials have warned of consequences for Facebook. In a March 21 interview with CNN, he answered the question of whether he would testify by saying he was "happy to, if it's the right thing to do".

He added that he felt it often made more sense to send subject matter experts.

Facebook says "It's Time to Make Our Privacy Tools Easier to Find". Cox is now slated to appear at a hearing in the coming weeks.

The Facebook CEO was hit by a barrage of criticism in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, after he refused to appear before a Parliamentary select committee inquiry and offered up two senior executives in his place. Zuckerberg has agreed to testify before Congress, facing lawmakers who have promised to crack down by regulating the social network.

The crisis also threatens the Silicon Valley tech industry whose business model revolves around data collected on internet users. "If we can't we don't deserve it", Zuckerberg said in the ads.

Spokespeople for the three committees - including the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Senate Commerce Committee - did not respond to emails seeking comment Tuesday. On Tuesday, it was reported that the 33-year-old chief exec would testify before US Congress - but his team have confirmed he doesn't plan to head the British Parliament's request.

The panel's GOP chairman, Greg Walden of OR, meanwhile complained to Bloomberg Radio that Facebook officials who briefed his committee this week couldn't answer all of the members' questions.

The US Federal Trade Commission this week said it had launched a probe into whether the social network violated consumer protection laws or a 2011 court-approved agreement on protecting private user data.

Facebook Inc has adjusted privacy settings to give users more control over their information in a few taps, it said on Wednesday, after an outcry over a whistleblower's allegations that members' data was used to sway the 2016 US election.

Both of the Facebook executives willing to give evidence, Simon wrote, report directly to Zuckerberg.

The data originated from a personality quiz app developed in 2013 by a Cambridge University researcher. He suggested that the company combines computer algorithms and dirty tricks to help candidates win regardless of the cost.
