Facebook tweaks security settings after privacy fallout

"The last week showed how much more work we need to do to enforce our policies, and to help people understand how Facebook works and the choices they have over their data", Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, and Ashlie Beringer, a Facebook deputy general counsel, said in a statement announcing the new system.

Facebook's shares were up 1.2 percent at $154 on Wednesday.

"Learning of the recent meddling in a free USA election further demonstrates another concern we have of how they handle users' data - more than 25 million of which are Playboy fans - making it clear to us that we must leave the platform", Cooper Hefner wrote on Twitter. The company also promised changes to its policies that would increase transparency.

"It doesn't seem that the changes that have been proposed are particularly meaningful", Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser said.

It has plunged Facebook into one of its worst crises of confidence in years.

The move, which Facebook said was in the works even before the Cambridge Analytica scandal shook the company and its stock price, is unlikely to put to rest the broader issue of user privacy. The feature presented users with a three-step process to modify who could see their posts, applications that are connected to their account and who could view personal details on their profiles.

"We're introducing Access Your Information - a secure way for people to access and manage their information, such as posts, reactions, comments, and things you've searched for".

It was uncertain whether the changes will satisfy lawmakers.

The government is working on a data protection law, which is expected in a few months only. GDPR is been created to protect the digital security of citizens within the European Union and how this policy limits the online companies collect data of their consumers.

Facebook is in damage control mode as it deals with the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

He plans to testify before Congress, a source briefed on the matter said on Tuesday.

The hearing is set for April 10 in Washington, DC. The Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday demanded that the chief exec appear before them, and the House Energy and Commerce Committee also expects Zuckerberg to testify.

At this time, Facebook called themselves a "social utility" in one of their first press releases on privacy, announcing, "additional controls for News Feed and Mini-Feed in response to user feedback and to reaffirm its commitment to industry-leading privacy practices".
