Russian Federation will 'of course' expel British diplomats over nerve toxin attack: Lavrov

US UK France Germany blame Russia for nerve-agent attack

Johnson said the attack on Skripal and his daughter with a military-grade nerve toxin was most likely ordered by Putin himself.

Russian Federation will expel British diplomats in a worsening global standoff over a nerve-agent attack on a former spy and his daughter, but still isn't saying when or how many.

The Russian diplomates are due to leave London on 20 March, RIA news agency quoted Russia's ambassador to Britain as saying.

Separately on Friday, police in London launched a murder investigation into the death this week of a Russian associate of late tycoon Boris Berezovsky, but said nothing at this stage suggested a link to the Skripal case.

On Thursday, in a rare joint statement, the leaders of the United States, Germany and France joined May in accusing Russian Federation of being behind the attack.

He had previously said Russian Federation had no motive to target Skripal, but suggested others could use the poisoning to "complicate" the World Cup.

Mr Corbyn said Labour did not support Mr Putin and that Russian Federation should be held to account if it was behind the attack.

Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal had been granted refuge in the United Kingdom in 2010 under a "spy swap" but was found unconscious with his 33-year daughter outside a shopping centre in Salisbury.

Russian Federation denies being the source of the nerve agent, suggesting it could have been another country, and has demanded Britain share samples collected by investigators.

Speaking to the AP, he called it unlikely that some of the nerve agent could have gone missing in the years after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Skripal, a former colonel in the GRU who betrayed dozens of Russian agents to British intelligence, and his daughter have been critically ill since March 4, when they were found unconscious on a bench. A British policeman who was also poisoned when he went to help them is in a serious but stable condition. The tensions threaten to overshadow Putin's expected re-election on Sunday for another six-year presidential term.

Britain is expelling 23 Russian diplomats and taking other steps against Russian interests as the two nations' relations sink to a post-Cold War low.

Mentioning Putin in the context of Sergei Skripal's poisoning "is nothing but shocking and unforgiveable behaviour from the point of view of diplomacy", Peskov said.

The war of words between Moscow and London continued Friday, with Lavrov lashing back at British Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson for saying Russian Federation "should go away and shut up". Russia's defence ministry said he was an "intellectual impotent" and Mr Lavrov said he probably lacked education. Williamson studied social science at the University of Bradford.
