Chrome to explicitly warn users that HTTP sites are "not secure"

As part of its longstanding drive to push websites to embrace encrypted connections Google is further distancing itself from HTTP sites

Gogole's approach to HTTPS adoption is very much a "carrot and stick" move, on one hand presenting HTTPS as an appealing and easy-to-use protovol and on the other penalising webisted that drag their feet when it comes to moving to the more secure protocol.

Google is not alone in its decision to penalize all HTTP sites.

With the release of Chrome 68 in July, Google will mark all HTTP websites as "not secure" using a newly designed address bar (seen below). Mozilla started this trend in December a year ago when engineers started laying the groundwork for Firefox to mark all HTTP sites as "Not Secure" as well.

Google has to come up with this decision as nowadays, most of the websites owners are adopting the HTTPs to run their websites and for that reason, Google is limiting the usages of this service on the websites which still runs through HTTP.

Google push for the increased use of HTTPS has already made the web safer for its users and over 68 per cent of Chrome traffic on Android and Windows and 78 per cent of Chrome traffic on Chrome OS and Mac is now protected. As Google explains, "When you load a website over HTTP, someone else on the network can look at or modify the site before it gets to you".

Google first announced its plans for the transition in September 2016. In addition, 81 of the top 100 websites uses HTTPS by default.

Since then, a majority of websites has implemented HTTPS and the remaining is making progress towards that goal, said Chrome security product manager Emily Schechter, said in a blog Jan 8. Chrome for example now offers support for so-called mixed content audits to help site administrators more easily identify situations where a HTTPS enabled site might request an insecure HTTP.

According to the company, the transition from HTTP to HTTPS helped protect over 68 per cent of Chrome traffic on Android and Windows a year ago.
