George W. Bush: Russians 'Meddled' in 2016 Election; Unclear They Changed Outcome

Former U.S. President George W. Bush speaks during the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills California U.S. on Wednesday

Bush said during a summit Thursday in the United Arab Emirates there is evidence Russians meddled in the 2016 presidential election. "Whether they affected the outcome is another question", ABC News reported Bush saying at the event. He added: "It's problematic that a foreign nation is involved in our election system".

"The Russian government has made a project of turning Americans against each other, " Bush said during a forum in NY in October. Trump said in November he's "with our agencies" on their assessment, but added he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin "feels that he and Russia did not meddle in the election".

Bush has previously spoken out about Russia's influence in the 2016 election. "I had tried, but unsuccessfully", he said without naming Trump.

Last month, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said that Russian Federation will be meddling in this year's midterm elections.

Pivoting to the topic of immigration, Bush called for reform ― another possible critique of Trump.
